What is Domestic Violence

What is domestic violence?

A pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain control over another partner.

Abuse can occur in cycles

  1. Tension building
  2. Incident of abuse or violence
  3. Reconciliation
  4. Calm

Abuse does not always follow a cycle, and every situation is different.

Recognizing signs of abuse

Abuse can take many forms. These behaviors may be warning signs, especially when they are part of a pattern of control.

Making decisions for a partner without their consent
Monitoring a partner's phone or computer
Controlling your words or behaviors
Using insults or humiliation
Preventing you from going to work or school
Using jealousy to justify controlling behavior
Preventing you from spending time with family, and friends
Monitoring social media activities or your location
Threatening pets, family, or children
Abusing alcohol or drugs
Destroying belongings
Threatening you or causing physical harm
Blaming you for their behavior
Breaking or striking objects
Taking control of your money
Stalking
Pressuring or forcing you to have sex
Refusing to let you end the relationship
Pressuring a partner to move the relationship faster than they want
